fixed my u-joint
fixed my u-joint
It wasn't the joint. The yoke on the back of the transmission was loose on the output shaft. It's not slip-jointed, I don't know if they built them this way or a previous owner put a slip joint eliminator kit in it for some reason, but I'm leaning toward the factory because I can still read the Chrysler sticker on the front half of the shaft.
If it weren't for the grease and oil everywhere I would have taken some pictures. I do have a intermittant scraping sound now, I think it might be the carrier, there is some sort of disk in front of it on the shaft.
Tool list-
5/16 box end wrench, preferably 6 point
11/16 box end wrench
5/8 socket and ratchet, or impact
1 1/8 inch socket and ratchet with a short extension for the yoke jam nut
I didn't think to check clearance under the frame, I had to jack up the right side and set the wheels on blocks. Blocked a left wheel so it didn't roll. Also jacked up the rear tire and used it to turn the shaft when needed.
Leaves me with just a fuel leak to fix.

The scraping was that disk on the shaft beside the carrier. I loosened the carrier and pushed it back and tightened it up, and it went away. Then the snap rings on the center joint weren't seated good, and it wanted to come apart, had lots of play side to side in it. Pulled it back off and got them seated good and tapped on the yoke just enough to loosen the joint up. Put two more tires on it and I think I am ready to go.
