Falty Speed Sensors?

I've been burning through speed sensors like crazy... I broke the gear box coming out of my tranny that has the little speed sensor attatched and had a new one built by a guy who builds them custom. I replaced the speed sensor(I don't know the correct term for it) that screws into that little gear box and got my speedometer to work for 4 months or so, then that sensor quit working and I lost my speedometer again. this happens about every 4 months on the dot now and I've replaced it like 4 times and finally gave up because they keep failing. I'm at a loss here and was wondering if anyone has any ideas on what it could be... thanks
