Engine has been sitting....
Well boys...finally making some headway on my crewcab conversion...time has NOT been on my side to this point....lol...anyway...my question is with respect to starting a diesel engine that has been sitting for a couple years and has not been started...the fluids were all drained...but that was all that was done...
is there a way of pushing engine oil through the system prior to actually firing her up??? how hard is it to turn the engine manually using the crank??
any advice would be MOST welcome...as the plan is to fire the cummins this weekend...thx..vs

Im interested in this too. My truck sits for about a week or two at a time, and i cringe to know that there is no oil on the barrings. i know that there are electric pumps that prime the oil. I would like to have something that you can crank or pump to prime the oil.

Just an accumulator and a couple valves. you can build one your self.
They also have them for the rock crawling crowds for on their auto trannies so if they get really off camber and the pump can no longer draw fluid, they'll still be able to move. At least for a little bit.

Turning it over by hand is not going to be enough to prime the pump unless you possess some sort of super man powers. If you ever notice when you first fire it up usually takes two seconds at 900 RPM's for the pump to pick up oil from the pan. To me cranking it over slowly is just squeezing out any residual oil out of the bearings. I you really want to prelube you can use a cheap garden sprayer with a pint of oil in it adapted to the oil filter housing plug. Otherwise light it off and don't worry about it. Remember that farm equipment with the 6BT's sometimes sets for many months at a time without getting prelubed before it is started. You can always add some Lucas oil additive if you are concerned about something that sets for a week at a time. Cranking it over with the starter for long periods of time should make your local auto parts store owner happy. They love to sell starters.
