dealing with ice on widshield

In the mornings I am fine since I park inside overnight. Once I park at work though and the engine cools down what is the best way to get it cleared up again.

Takes forever idling for the engine to warm up when it is in the lower twenties outside and sleeting.

Chemical deicers work well?

Just wondering what others have found.

Dump a good quart of methyl hydrate into your windshield washer fluid, and use that. Does a nice job.

Personally, I have also found that methyl alcohol works great, I add some to my windshield washer fluid, but also carry a spray bottle of the stuff pure. Dissolves any ice from anything. I do avoid the paint though, just as a precaution.

Or a good sized piece of cardboard held in place by the wiper.

Is that denatured alcohol you are reffering to?

A great ice scraper works the best for me. Rain X has some stuff now that helps keep the ice off the windshield and also makes it repel water rather well. But still it will freeze when it gets down there (-5).

I used to have that problem when I lived in Michigan and never liked it much. I took care of that when I moved to Southwestern New Mexico. Now if it gets a little frosty in the AM, I just use a scraper and in 2 min I'm done. I still complain about that

Yep, here in ks we get the worst of both worlds

get the heat and humidity of the southeast in the middle of summer. Then the cold of the north in the middle of winter.

The weather is perfect about 4wks out of the year.

I use the de-icer in a spray can if it's really bad, otherwise I scrape some holes so I can see and start driving.

No, I am basically talking about methanol, the main ingredient in the windshield washer fluid. If you ckeck around the lubricant shops, you should be able to find it sold by the gallon. Works wonders.

The sun screen protects you from the sun, the other stuff makes you not give a rat if the sun hits you or not...
