Going to adjust my valves tommorrow.
I was wondering about re-torqueing the head bolts while i'm in there.
What torque value should I use?

 

A lot of people say 125 ft lbs. I only went about 115 on mine because i didn't exactly like how the bolts felt.

 

the new cummins specs use a torque plus angle method. the final torque value is 89ft. lbs plus an additional 90* turn. i checked them after the 90* turn and they were at at least 125ft. lbs.

 

It is worth doing IMO. I would do them 1 at a time. Pull the bolt's out and clean them. Lube the threads, under the bolt head, and on the head right where the bolt sits. That makes them torque much smoother. Be sure to clean out any gunk that might be in the block. If the bolts are in good shape, they should go 125ft/lbs. pretty easy.

 

IIRC, that 91 truck you drive has the earlier head bolts that use a different torque method compared to the later 1st gens. It seems if Dodge ever had to remove the head-bolts in the shop, they might have replaced them with the newer.

Anybody know anymore about that?

 

you'd probably have to check them on the stretch gauge. but yes, the NEW bolts use a torque plus angle method. i didn't specify. but even the old ones can handle 125ft. lbs re-torque. plenty of others here have done it. i think jqmile re-torqued his to 125ft. lbs also.
