cold starting

i got a quick question.ive noticed latley when its been cold and the truck needs or even doesnt need the grid it dont want to start on the first crank like it did before, but when it warms up it now takes a 2nd crank, the battery is new alternator new 1 1/2 years ago ,could it be the voltage regulator gone bad in the brain and i need to go to an external one?cause if i go out right now bout 35* it will sound like it just killed the battery, any help thanked and Merry Christmas

Maybe the fuel lines aren't staying primed?

Is your KSB working? When I first got my truck the temp switch for the ksb was burnt up, so, cold starts were rough, and it would smoke and miss until it started to warm up. I replaced the switch and all was fine until yesterday. The plug on the pump that powers the whole circuit(at the FSS) lost it's connection, and cold starting made for it starting hard, stalling, and then missing and smoking up a storm on the second start. Fixed the plug, and all was fine this morning at -13 even after sitting for 2 hours not plugged in before I started it.... And, I'm short 1 grid relay....

I would blame hard starting from an electrics perspective more on the lack of grids. The KSB doesn't do anything to help starting. But like Matt said, there is no substitute for a tight fuel system.

My truck starts a bit harder without the 1/2 of the grids I have functioning(unplugged them a few times to avoid killing a low battery) but it doesn't start and stall like it without the grids like it will without the KSB working, my 6.9 was the same, no cold advance, and a guranteed hard start... No grids, it smokes, but, it still starts easier than it does without the KSB.
At more moderate temperatures, say 0F and above, I haven't noticed a difference, but, in real cold, I sure do.

I don't see how the KSB can advance anything until "after" it starts.

What group and cca is your bus battery? If it's 900 and not a group 31, that's your problem. A 900cca small sissy battery won't do the job a group 31 900cca battery will do.
