After you have been reading these threads a long time, you will see that there are numerous no-start/run-bad/no-power issues where the truck owner has no idea where to start looking for his problem.

The generic fix-all is "try a new fuel-filter"; whereas, a fuel-pressure reading will most likely save the expense of throwing away an otherwise good filter; two filters will pay for a gauge, one more will cover the various fittings necessary.

Also, the VE has a vane-pump that is capable of drawing fuel through a dead lift-pump, with the driver being none the wiser; many have found their lift-pump to have been completely dead for who knows how long; this lack of cooling/lubing fuel can be nothing but bad for the VE.

In a perfect situation, one should have a gauge on both sides of the filter.

These need not be in the cab; located somewhere in the engine compartment is fine, so long as the one on the down-stream side of the filter is in the cab (or readable from in the cab; it can be mounted on the cowl or the mirror, for that matter).

Once you start with the modifications it is not uncommon to pull down fuel pressure to nothing at WOT. VE's lubed with fuel, zero fuel pressure cannot be good as BearKiller has stated.
