Barring tool

Has any one had trouble with using a barring tool? I have one marked OTC 3377371 (cummins number) and it acts like its hitting on something inside the hole and not allowing it to go in straight so it just binds up. Do I have the right tool? Mine has a flange that is 1.5 inches in diameter and the part that goes in thru the hole is 1.140" at the flange and tapers to 1.120" at the end of the teeth. I guess you just have to be smarter than the tool your working with. Thanks.

some of the barring tools have clips that allow you to change position of a collar to control depth... check that first. in all honesty mine is a snap on tool and its never really worked great on my truck, my friends 24 valve it works excellent on though...

Mine is just a solid hunk of steel. I'm thinking that it may have been machined a little too big. I bought the tool to make the job easier not harder. I may pull the down pipe and front drive shaft and try to get a better look as I put the tool in. Thanks.

Just use a 7/8 socket on the alternator pully

I have the timing cover off so I used a couple of bolts in the crank snout, just bought the tool to make things easier.
