Axle repair
I was looking at my front axle (Dana 60) yesterday while givin her some grease and I saw that the u-joints to the axle shafts were in need of some replacement. How difficult is it to take them out to replace? I have never done this but it needs to be done soon.

i did mine it was not to bad wheels come off brake clapper and the hole hub and bearings come out then when u get to the cone take all 8 bolt i think that hold it on but mark a line on the cone to the of peace that it is bolted to i forget whats its called. so when u put it back on it goes on the same way the clapper bracket comes of with the cone once the bolts r off and axle will slide out . cone will be stuck in there from rust and stuff so hit the cone up and down but not where the bearings sit . here in canada the joints r 95 dollers each i dont know y they r so much but what ever .

That was the first time into a D 60. Careful with the hub there was a lot of little parts. And the caliper was different from anything I've been in, you'll need an allen wrench for the bolt and a hammer and a pair of pliers for the "slide lock thing". But mostly just bolts.........

It is a job getting to them and getting them out. But it can be done with basic handtools. And it's one of them things that once you do one side of the truck, you're a qualified expert! So the opposite side will be easier and go faster.
Once you do get the axleshafts out REMEMBER!!! Even tho it doesn't look like it, there ARE retainer clips on the U-joint caps. Dana pulled a fast one on us and put them on the INSIDE of the yoke. So, If your axle shafts were like mine you'll have to lubricate, pry, poke and prod just to find 'em. After that it's reasonably straight forward.
