Auto Trans Question

Over the summer my buddies bike broke down in New Hampshire. Anyhow I went pick him and the bike up and while he was waiting for me to get out there(1100miles oneway) he spotted a 1992 CTD with an auto trans. When I go there we stopped and looked at it. The asking price was 1200 which seemed good. Anyhow it started right up and ran like a top however when i put it in drive or reverse it would go no where. It barley moved when i really got on it. the guy said it drove fine an hour home for him. He did get the Truck to move but it seem to take alot of power to get too move. My question is Is this how all the CTD are with autos? Do they take time to warm up? Do they take a heavy foot to get them moving? Or was something broke. we passed on it and on the way home the guy called us and said he would take 900 for it. we were just unsure and didn't want the thing to break down because it ain;t no VW rabbit truck hook it up any car and flat tow it home. Anyhow info and input would be great so If I;m in this pickle again I can make the right choice. Look back now I almost wish I would have said 800 and rolled the dice if the guy said yes.

I got a 90' w/ an auto in it. When I let it sit for a while like a couple weeks, it does take a heavy foot to get it started again. I don't know why that is, but mine is the same way that you described. Seems like once I fire it up & let it run for five minutes, it will move as soon as I punch it. Hope fully someone can explain why that is.

I've been told the converters can drain back into the tranny when the engine is off if the check valve is not working right. When the truck is started in park, the tranny doesn't pump any oil into the converter so when you put it in drive there is no go until some fluid gets into the converter to make the connection. I had this problem until the converter was replaced and it doesn't do it anymore.

Try idling in neutral for a minute to see if that makes any dfference. This will fill the converter back up.

Mine has done the same thing since it had 60,000 miles on it. you are right Paccool, it is the check valve letting the oil drain out of the torque converter. I just let mine idle in neutral for 30 seconds after start up and then put her to the floor and hang on.

Sounds like you had it running long enough for the TC to fill. Should have checked the tranny fluid level, if its too low it won't move.

My experience is with mostly high-miler vehicles, but every 727 I ever drove did that. My '91 with the A518E did it too. Seems to get going better if you back up a little before trying to go forward. Especially after it's been sitting for a few days.

Mine has over 175000 calculated miles. If I let it sit in cold weather for a week it does seem to take more throttle to get it moving. Once I have let it warm for five minutes in gear it goes OK. I have been told and believe that the tranny will not pump fluid through the entire system in Park. Put it in gear or in Nuetral for warm up.
