auto trans fluid & filter change

I'm gonna change the AT fluid and filter today IF the local parts store has the filter. Anyone have any suggestions, do's , dont's or upgrades before I start?

Yeah-put in 2 qts of 30 wt oil to keep the temps down and add a bottle of the Lubegard! IT ALL HELPS! You will get firmer shifts and less slipage! Do you have a drain plug in pan? If not this is the time to put 1 in!

I'm not sure about using the motor oil part but I have heard that some people run the F trans fluid forquicker shifts....I run Type F in all our company's trucks.

Adjust your Tranny bands while having the pan off. I don't have my manual right in front of me but I think one is inside the pan to adjust. Torque it ot 72 INCH pounds and then back off (I think) about 2 turns. Don't quote me as I haven't looked in the manual for some time about this.

The other adjustment is outside the pan and it is torque to 72 INCH pounds also and then back off 2 turns I think.

Thanks for the replies. I ended up using a Mobile1 oil filter and just changed the trans fluid and filter. I used Castrol ATF. The air filter was dirtier than what I wanted so I put an STP from Autozone on. I am getting the material gathered to build an Old Smokey mount but I didn't wanna wait till then to change the filter. Also gonna wait until I get a service manual before I adjust the bands. The magnet in the pan had a little powder fine particles on it. There was also a few specks of aluminum in the bottom of the pan. How bad is that? Gonna do the diff and transfer case oil change next week-end weather permitting.

Little specks sounds like normal wear. I have seen think goop in mine but that was the original tranny and not sure of the maintence record before I got it. Since replacing tranny, I see little specks now and then doing maintence on a regular basis.
