'92 - injection pump issues?

HI - I had a thread earlier where I was describing an issue that a lot of people suggested my problem was with the shut off solenoid. ('92 wont start -sometimes) I did a few tests and changed the terminal on the solenoid to the ring type but this made no difference. When I removed the solenoid and activated it outside of the truck a few times and then replaced it - the truck would start at a touch of the key - once! Then no matter how long it was runnig it would not re-start just as if it was not getting any fuel. So in my wisdom I figured I had it all figured out and bought a new solenoid. It did not make any difference. I since have discovered that when I remove the solenoid it is doing something to allow the fuel to pass through to where it needs to get for the truck to start - once. So I thought that if there is a bad connection to the solenoid I could prove that by using the top portion of the solenoid only as a plug and there would be no restriction for the fuel - the result was the same - would start once only and not after I shut it off - just this time I needed to stall the engine to actually shut it off. Has any one had this happen before or am I actually going to have to bite the bullet and replace the injection pump?

Thanks for your time and asistance. -Derrick

Connect a test light to your shut off solenoid and see if your harness is functioning properly with your ignition switch.

That's an odd one. You gutted the solenoid so it's not electrical. Have you tried giving it some throttle when starting the second time? VE's go to full fuel at zero RPM, so when you crank the truck it's as if you had the throttle on the floor. When it hits about 300 RPM the govoner takes over and starts to control fuel, so maybe somethings hanging hanging up and it's not fueling at low RPMs.

The other thing could be if it's pulling air into the suction side of the fuel system, or the lift pump could be toast. Plumb in a section of clear fuel line ahead of the lift pump to check for bubbles in the line and put a cheap pressure gauge at the fuel filter banjo bolt to check the fuel pressure.

Did you try and run the truck with the plunger and spring removed from the solenoid ? if it runs like that you know its the solenoid or the power to it .
use the manual kill to shut down.

Yes - I have tried that with out success. When the truch does start it runs perfect. After about an hour of working it, the truck will not idle on it's own and quits as if it runs out of fuel and will not start again until I remove the solenoid and I get one crack at it.

I replaced the pick up pump anf filter. A fuel injection place indicated that there is springs inside the injector pump that sound like they broke. They are recommending a rebilt tot he tune of $1100. What I do not understand is why the pressure is great enough to start after I remove the solenoid for an instant but not there afterwards? I currenlt have the plunger out of the shut off solenoid with the same issues present so I am confident it is not with the shut off system.

I tried hooking up an electric pump infront of the filter form another fuel container and had the same results. From that I am guessing that the issue is not from the filter back to the tank.

I do not have a methond to test the pressure so I guess I should take the pump off and get the injection place to test it.
Thanks for the ideas.

I would tend to agree that something has failed in the pump. $1100.00 may be a little high, depending on the area you're from. If you can do without the truck for a bit there are places you can ship to that will do it cheaper. 6-700.00 is about the going rate from what I've seen.

I was quoted 1100 as well until they told me it needed a new head and rotor which was another 500. So 1600 later and it get rebuilt.
