89 W250 Mechanical Speedometer Cable Questions
What specific parts were installed between the NP205 transfer case and the mechanical speedometer in an 89 Dodge W250? RockAuto lists a lower cable to a sensor and an upper cable. Was there a one piece cable for the 5 speed trucks? Was there any sort of gear reducer or direction changing component that attaches to the transfer case? What parts do I need? Other than at a junk yard, where would the best place to find them? Anyone have Autozone, Carquest, NAPA part numbers, etc? Thanks.
If your truck was 2wd, I could maybe help you, as I went through all of that getting the 89 Getrag spliced to my Ford speedo.
I can't vouch for the 4wd set-up; but, I do know for a fact that the 2wd MUST HAVE the adapter gizmo that screws into the transmission; because, the adapter REVERSES the direction of rotation.
This gave me fits for weeks, until I noticed that my odometer was running BACKWARDS, taking miles off of my truck, while the speedo needle layed un-moving on zero.
I took apart the adapter that I had, milled a replacement gear-drive-shaft, and re-assembled; once installed, my speed and odometer are now dead on the money.
I don't know just exactly what year they quit the cable speedo, but the cables are way ahead of that troublesome electric mess.
