46 rh

Hello all my ole beast 93 w250 with the a518 couldn’t get outa of its own way when loaded. 20’ trailer with skid steer and few attachments, any slight grade would slow right down rpm not really change, I pulled the trans pan after a 400km trip loaded and pan had some silver goodies in it changed filter and adjusted bands no real difference, I thought it would be a trans issue but going through maintance records from previous owner who bought brand new and has everything ever down pen to truck including fuel fill ups, so with that saying the transmission appears to have about 150k Km on it. I pulled transmission to have a friend go through it during automotive school but that fell through and I’m stuck with Whether to take it for rebuild or do a swap for a better trans? I can get a good deal on a nv4500 but not sure if I want to go to a manual ? I don’t drive like a idiot and the most I haul is my skid steer occasionally. Any feed back appreciated

Torque converter is the biggest flaw, an upgraded one will do wonders. After I had mine rebuilt, mine pulls better than a stock 3rd gen. Just wish I had lockup.

Is a stock 46 rh decent with a upgraded torque? I know lock up would be ideal but until I can come across a good used one or till my money tree starts producing it’s not in the cards.

Well the cost of a good quality low stall is a bit costly....still cheaper then doing the NV4500 swap. And since you already have the tranny out I would pull it apart and at least toss in some new clutches.

There are plenty of tutorials on you tube. A master kit with clutches and steels along with a good converter will do wonders for it. Be sure to flush out the coolers and lines real good though.

What converter did you go with, and did you put a shift kit in?

I got mine from Revmax was much better than stock. They were pretty cheap a few years ago actually. I can't compare it to a goerend, suncoast, etc. however. I wanted to install a shift kit but the trans shop did such a poor job rebuilding my trans I had to cut my losses just so I could have my truck back.

Well I loaded the trans up and going to take to a trans shop for a inspection today and hopefully they have some good news and nothing too major wrong if anything, I don't want to spend a whole bunch on this trans because ideally I'm trying to find a 47rh but they don't want to give those away.

You should be able to find a 47RH out of a V10. All you have to do to it is replace the governor assembly to make it work on a diesel. That is what I have in mine.

You can convert your 46RH to a lockup cheaper than finding a 47RH. Check my thread in the sticky.

rebuilding the 47 RH is no different then doing a 46 rh but all the other things you need motor plate, starter, torque converter, drive line or drive lines, moving the rear trans mount.the wiring for the lock up. Ken

Thank you for all the responses have my 518 at tranny shop for inspection only I don’t wanna put much if any money into that trans and I want to try and gather up all he parts needed for a 47 rh swap, after a bunch of research and talking to a few people I know with the 4( rh they say it’s the best thing ever so hope I can find all the pieces with in a year or 2

kensmachine 01-05-2019 10:01 AM

I did the swap from 46RH to 47RH I would say if you don't do a lot of towing or a lot of long road trips save your money. Just do a good rebuild with a good converter and you will be just as happy and will have saved $ 1500-2500 Ken

Can you run a 47 e with out the standalone computer and put a manual valve body in?
