318 Engine?

Hey all, I had a debate the other day and the guy I was talking to said his stock 318 could pull my truck all over the road. I have a 91 W250 with the 5.9 cummins in it that has a denny-t pin and 366 spring. My question is.. what is a 318? I did some googling and there was a LA version and canada version but those are all 206HP engines. Am I looking at the wrong thing?

I thought maybe it was a 318hp motor which might produce more torque..

Its a small block V8 gas engine. Came as a poly 318, LA 318, TBI 318, magnum 318 and probably others. Great engine but a stock 318 won't pull a Cummins all over the road unless the Cummins is in neutral with foot off the brake.

Your friend is delusional

Ah, so it's a dodge engine? Not really a friend, just a guy at the bar when I picked up my gf.

Yep, chrysler engine i guess. It was put in everything mopar including jeeps. In later years it was called the 5.2 litre. Its very similar to the 360/5.9 litre if you are familar with them.

Sounds like the guy was in the bar to long lol

318

There is also a Detroit engine called a 318. If I'm not mistaken, it is an 8v71 which means it has 566 CI. Maybe he was referring to that one..

Well if he's talking about the Detroit the cummins would still likely win as the Detroit would spin out in its own oil slick lol

Heh. very weird to know that some of you are unfamiliar with the cubic inches Maybe you guys are uniting with the metric systesm with the rest of us!

And no... 318 won't pull Cummins anywhere...

I had a '96 5.2L (318) Ram 1500, and it could hardly pull my dad's 16' car hauler. It would downshift at the slightest incline. Maybe it was tired, I don't know. They only had 215 horsepower back then iirc, 5.9L had 235.

the 318 (5.2) is a strong, perky, reliable engine. With a decent 4 barrel on it, it can make some tire smoke. But when the 5.9 CTD is just starting to lean into the load a bit, the 318's all done.

I own one of each.

The 318 is a good motor. Its just not a Cummins. I've had both and I've towed with both. Cummins hands down. The 318 in a light valiant with a 4 speed and 4bbl carburetor and headers will haul the mail, but she won't tow.

I pulled my cummins to town with my 92 dakota 318 4x4 automatic......it was on a trailer though I could pull it no problem, just had to start stopping about 3 blocks before the turn or stop sign.

Actually, the Detroit 6v53 is 318 cubic inches. 53 x 6 = 318

318's are killer motors, if it was stock, no chance it could keep up. If it wasn't, then it may give you a run for your money. Unless you're towing.
