1991.5 w250 build

Hey everybody, new here to DTR and 1st gens. I bought a 1991.5 W250 141K miles, last week from up around Detroit Michigan. A farmer had the truck and didnt use it, it just sat in his garage and decided he wanted to get rid of it. I had been looking for a clean 1st gen for awhile so i went up and looked at it and had it shipped back home. The truck was repainted a few years ago Orange and Matte black. At the moment i havent done anything to the truck but the first thing on the agenda is to get the front end/steering under control. Its very sloppy. Plan on doing Red Head steering gear box, Tie Rod ends, Drag link, Borgenson Shaft in the coming weeks. This truck is just a fun truck for me, not a daily driver.

Throttle Linkage popped off on a short drive through town. Ordered a Crazy Carl Throttle Linkage will be getting that on hopefully tonight. Temp fix i just wrapped it in electrical tape to get me home. Most front end parts are ordered and making their way to the house, will be installing when i get the time.

Indeed...I like the color scheme...:agree:...Ben

That is a clean looking rig!

Welcome to the 1st gen addiction forum. I have never heard of Crazy Carl throttle linkage, I always upgraded to 2nd gen throttle ends. But its always good to have a back up source for repair work.
That is a clean looking truck, though I don't like the wheels and O-ring style tires and smoke stack, but that's my opinion. I would drive it everyday, because I drive that kind of stuff everyday!

Blue Goose 04-19-2019 07:46 PM

welcome, great looking truck!

I would drive it everyday but my work is an hour away so I have a car just from MPG. I’m not the biggest fan of the tires I wanna lift and go bigger. The stack is growing on me. I’ve only had it for a week but have some plans! Thank you for the compliment!

All my front end parts have made it to the house. Hope to get to work on it some this weekend. RedHead box showed up yesterday, Moog Tie Rod Ends, Moog Drag Link. Did figure out that the truck already has the Borgeson Shaft.

Also got the Crazy Carl Throttle Linkage installed. The ball studs on mine were kinda a pain to get off.

They need to make some sort of "Patina Spray" for new parts to make them blend in with the old ones.

DevynBurk 04-27-2019 03:26 AM

Haha yeah the patina spray would be arlight for now... hoping one day they can all look new under the hood! :stir::peel:

DevynBurk 05-04-2019 06:10 PM

So I undid the power steering hoses from the steering box and have heard there is an O-Ring I’m supposed to check for. Where is it located? Between the hose and nut? Or on the end of the hose?

Also saw my steering box mount was cracked so I had a buddy weld it back up for me.

DevynBurk 05-08-2019 05:12 AM

Anyone who wants to know the part number for the O-Rings that go on the power steering hoses is 5205254

DevynBurk 05-22-2019 06:51 AM

Front end is finished! Alignment is done. Ordered a dual steering stabilizer from skyjacker I hope to get put on this weekend.

Had several cosmetic changes so far. Tailgate letters in black, Black LED headlights, painted the headlight bezels black, Black hood ornament, and 50 cal. radio antenna.

Also got a new rear view mirror that acts as a dash camera and will be wiring in a backup camera that it came with also!

Thanks! haha yeah its a extendable magnet I dropped the nut on the backside of the hood ornament and couldnt reach it. It did get put away, but good catch and thanks for the reminder!

Got a new grille and had a guy on FaceBook (Karriker Kustoms) make me some grille inserts. I plastidipped the chrome to see if i liked it being black, since I like it im gonna have it painted when the plastidip starts to peel.

KRB 06-27-2019 05:38 AM

Same for the mirror bases?

DevynBurk 06-27-2019 08:27 AM

I need to do those, ran out of plastidip on the grille. Just havent bought more yet.

DevynBurk 06-28-2019 05:13 AM

So i believe my voltage regulator went out... *me and electricity dont get along*.

My dash is reading like 16 volts and when i accelerate it goes close to 17 volts. I have heard that these are a common issue. Do I have to just buy them and replace them as I go or is it usually another
issue that can be fixed and not have to worry about replacing them all the time.

Everything else on the truck works fine electrically.

oliver foster 06-28-2019 09:33 AM

Check out the thread from yesterday for charging problems for a '91.

DevynBurk 06-28-2019 10:36 AM

So you think rewiring from the battery to the VR will resolve my issue and get a new VR & Plug in the process?

If i need a new VR should i get the HD from Alternatorparts.com? They sell a whole rewiring kit for like $65

oliver foster 06-28-2019 10:39 AM

If I had to buy a new VR, rather than use one of the dozen used ones I have on the shop shelf, I would definitely buy a MOPAR VR.

DevynBurk 06-28-2019 10:42 AM

Awesome thanks Oliver! luckily my dad is good with wiring so he will be able to help me. Ill test the VR I have on the truck and give it a go.

edwinsmith 06-28-2019 05:52 PM

I went through this whole issue with my truck. I replaced the VR for the pulsing issue. Then I had the VR go completely out. Then I added the relay to get battery straight to the VR "sense" pin. I had one VR give me 19 volts and burned up my battery. I finally got a genuine Mopar VR instead of the O'Reilly and AutoZone knock offs. and now the charging voltage sits at 14.7 volts according to the cheap digital voltmeter I installed. I haven't had any trouble since.

Make sure the VR has a GOOD GROUND also.

Edwin

Thanks Oliver! A new MOPAR VR was just the ticket. It was a crappy made in China VR the previous owner threw on the truck. If the issue persists I may do the one wire alternator.

Alright gents, my water in fuel light and wait to start light will start blinking rapidly after I’ve been driving for awhile and I will loose overdrive. If I keep driving it the lights stop blinking and I gain OD back. Not sure what is going on. I have read a few posts but I don’t have Grid Heaters and it’s not running funny except for loosing OD.

Where did you get the fuel to make pink smoke?

DevynBurk 08-27-2019 02:51 PM

Bought pink powder off of amazon and it came in bags and taped the bags to the tires.

KRB 08-28-2019 04:21 AM

Congratulations! I've mostly raised two of them. We didn't announce with pink burnouts back then though. Pretty cool.

Alright so I’m starting to tear into the front of the truck to do my KDP and I see that my condenser has some loose fins and some of them are coming out of the condenser. I’m planning on doing the mishimoto 7.3 intercooler. Should I just delete my AC? It’s only a fun truck, and the AC has never been cold since I bought the truck. Not to worried about not having AC as I usually only drive it a few times a week and it’s not that far.
