1991 4wd dually with auto?

Hey guys,im a 3rd gen owner, dont hold it against me... My buddy has a 1991 4x4 dually with 8' flatbed, and the auto trans.Wondering what the durability of the trans is.I would be using it to haul my skidsteer, total weight about 8,000#. Seems to me i remember the trans wasnt the best choice in that year, correct me if im wrong.Truck has new paint, new rubber,5ver set up,65K miles.Hes wanting somewhere in the $8,000.00 range.Engine (or pump) has never been modded.I welcome all opinions/input.Thanks.

65K miles? She's not even broke in As for the tranny dont sweat it. If worse comes to worse you can have it rebuilt. People like wannadiesel will tell ya bout that stuff. Anyhow I say go for it

Edit: There's absolutly nothing wrong with the auto transmission to my knowledge. It's the 5 speed thats suppose to be a little sketchy but I'm far from an expert eh. So lets see what everyone else has to say...

My experience is that the transmission can take the power of the engine and the weight of what you're towing. It just "dumbs" it down a bit. The torque converter isn't terribly efficient and you don't get all your power to the asphalt.

I agree. Tranny is just fine for the stock power and even some modified power. TC isn't the best but will handle the weight.

But, if you start to modify heavy, then maybe upgrade the tranny. Watch out for that bombing bug though. It will make a big difference in your towing. Even just a tad which shouldn't hurt the tranny will help you out a LOT.

Enjoy a REAL truck. Bumpy ride and all.
