1/2 fuel tank reads empty w/ light
1/2 fuel tank reads empty w/ light
I'm almost positive I have a 30 gal tank, but when my gage shows E ands I fill and it holds 15 or so gallons. Through the whole gages sweep it is smooth. I know some in reserve is good, but the other half of 30 gallons? Could the pick-up be that far up to cause this? Thanks, Artie
Onemoparnut and I were just discussing this a couple of days ago. Yep, the float and/or sender unit really can be that far up. You've got a 30 gallon tank, (I'm pretty sure we all do, the gassers had a smaller one I think) and the light should come on when you've got 6 or so gallons left. Mine does, but I don't ever trust it and just reset my trip meter every time I fill up. I figure around 15 mpgs, (I usually get a shade under that around town), so 30 x 15 = 450 miles. I generally fill up around 420 or so. I should really fill up before then, so I don't get condensation build up in the tank.
The sender could be hung up maybe the sender mechanism slides up and down a few inches. I guess if it is stuck up it may cause the light to come on prematurely but it would also cause you to run out of fuel prematurely.
