98 12v auto sometimes wont shift even if you shift it manually. and also sometimes when you go to take off it seems like its lockin the converter is locking up and wants to kill the engine you have to yank it down into first gear then it will go.

 

have you done the obvious checks of fluid level and condition. id drop the pan and do some investigating
