What to look for when buying
Hey forum:
I'm new to diesels and want to buy a 97-03, 12 or 24 valve 4x4 with a manual only. What things are the most important to be wary of with these trucks. Any assistance would be appreciated.
thanks.

One thing I'd check for on 98-00 or so models is the "53" block. If you crawl under the truck on the drivers side, just in front of the axle, above where the oil pan bolts to the block, there you should see about 1 inch numbers cast into the block. The 53 block series have had some problems with cracking. They do this under the turbo on the exhaust side of the motor, usually under the exh. manifold (check for that if it is a 53). Not ALL 53 blocks do crack, its around 1% or less (of the thousands) that actually do, but still if its got one I'd stay away just because its got the possibility. Mine has a 53 but I dont really worry about it.
Also the front ends on these trucks need to be pretty "tight", especially the 4x4. Some talk about a death wobble. Might want to search that, I'm not familiar with that too much. Hope this helps

I bought my 95 used and it had the death wobble. The bar that runs over the front diff. It attaches on the passenger side with a bolt and has a tie rod end (looking joint) on the drivers side. The ball in this joint was wore out. It could easily be seen with someone moving the steering wheel while you are looking at the joint. Cost is around 250.00 for a new part. When this part goes bad it litterly will walk out of the road with you. It is the only thing that ties both sides of the truck together.

I can't help you on the 12 valvers but on a 24 valve bring a fuel pressure gauge to make sure the Lift Pump ain't dead or dying. On 01 and 02 truck you can also turn the key on/off 3 times (w/o starting) and see if it shows any codes. If P0216 pops up then that means the injection pump is going out.
