two 12 valve blocks, and they are different.
I searched, and the stuff I found contradicts what I know, and what I have. So you guys explain it to me.......please.
I have a 98 12 valve 5 speed. (now converted to a nv5600).
The original engine is out. It is not a 53 block. It has all the characteristics found on the genos page about the 24 valve block.
It has the block heater boss, it has the two oil drain holes on the passenger side (I used the back one for my big turbo drain).
It had lots of bolt holes, and a seem/ rib running horizontally the lenght of teh block in aboyt the middle.
The rear corners are sharp.
It has three oil holes on the front passenger side.
The head says USA.
It is my oem 98 12 valve engine.
I have another 12 valve that I got from Joe Donnelly.
It has no horizontal rib/seem.
It has no block heater that I can find.
Its missing one oil hole onthe front passenger side (only two I think)
It has no second 3/4 oil drain on the rear passenger side.
The head that came with it says BRAZIL.
The entire casting appears smoother and smaller/less cluttered and has fewer holes.
First, was the whole second engine made in BRAZIL if teh head says Brazil?
Which is what? Which is better?
From a ease standpoint, it appears easier to rebuild my original, beacaus ethe "other engine is missing some bolts holes, and is missing the oil drain to the pan that I use for my big turbo of the twins.
The other issue id the oil passage differences on the front passenger side?
Is it safe to bore my original block 020 over? It measure 4.005- 4.010 already so I think it will have to go to 4.020.

From: North Carolina or Kentucky. Take your pick
It is my understanding that preceding the change to 24 valve for 98 1/2 that 12valve blocks were updated in late production to accomodate the 24 valve conversion. Numerous small changes were made in the block.
From your description, I believe your orginal engine was a very late 98 12v block and the oher is a early 98 or even a 97. JMHO

The best "B" series head is an aftermarket cast in Brazil.
Your engine was assembled in either Columbus, IN or Rocky Mount, NC.
B blocks can be bored 0.5mm or 1.0 mm oversize
