I know a 30 year tranny guy...he has told me never to flush an auto. Just drop the pan, change the filter and fill it back up. ATF +3 for both the tranny and transfer case.

I've flushed mine 2-3 times, and dropped the pan twice.

180,000 and still runs strong.

We only charge $60 for an auto trans flush. Of course it is extra to replace the filter, but I have never seen it cost over $100 for filter and a flush. I would look around and find a better deal than that. By dropping the pan you are only getting about 1/3 of the old fluid out, where a flush will get about 98% of the old fluid out. If you do take it in to get done, make sure they flush it with the old filter still in, otherwise the new filter will be full of the garbage that is in the bottom of the pan and the rest of the tranny. I have been rebuilding auto tanny's for about 7 years and my boss has been rebuilding them for over 35 years. Getting the transmission flushed and changing the filter,IMO, is the best way to keep it going for a long time.

isissound, fill in your sig when you get a second. Depending on what transmission you have the fluid required is different if you want to keep up your warranty. The filter in my 48re is just a screen so dropping the pan, and changing the fluid is really pretty easy. There is a cover over the torque converter you can get to the drain on it by turning the crank shaft. Then refill with appropriate oil. If you have the time it will save you some $$$$

There's the risk of forcing debris into places it normally wouldn't go, and plugging something up.

I think the pros outweigh the cons when it comes to getting all the skanky old fluid out though.

For a regular maint item, a flush and new filter is the way to go. On a tranny that has been abused and not maintained, you take a risk of flsuhing junk into places they shouldn't be. Used vehicles I have bought, done just a filter change with 4 quarts. Have used the lucas in my GM trannies and they love it.
