Transmission will not shift to 3rd gear when cold

I have a 1996 dodge 2500 with 150K miles living in St. Louis. The tranny filter was changed and new ATF3 added to the correct level. (1 week ago)The problem still exists. When the outside temperature drops below 45 degrees the tranny will not shift into 3rd gear until warm. ie it has been driven for 3-6 miles in second gear. Once warm the transmission will shift normally. It will when cold also not go into reverse. Any assistance in this is appreciated.

1. set the parking brake on level ground. 2. shift transmission to "N"-wait- 3. check fluid 4. add fluid slowly while at idle in "N" 5. check level.

chevy's you check in "P" dodge in "N"

try this first, you'll be surprised how much it will take.

Yes make sure you check the fluid in neutral with the tranny warm. Also; when its cold, they wont shift out of 3rd anyway, but it sounds like you have another problem.

Also check the throttle cable that goes to the tranny. Make sure it is free and piviots and returns ok.
