three questions coolant and ex springs

I don't want to perpuate a rumor so straighten me out. The other day someone said that some 12v trucks came with 60# springs stock. Is this true or not? If it is witch trucks were they standard in? OK first two questions asked.

Third, can the thermostat opening temperature be afected by a heating cycle? Background, last weekend I pulled the camper up into the mountians near here (up hwy 89 to Galax for those in the area) 2/3 of the way up the fan kicks in (boy what a sound!). At this I look at the coolant gauge in the dash, needle is somewhere around 210 to 220~. Coolant temp falls back to 180 before fan shuts off. Good, right? (fourth ?) Fan cycles two more times before reaching the "level" of the top of the hill/mountian but temperature never gets as high maybe 195ish. Still a few miles before reaching campground so truck has plenty of time to cool off before shutting down. Coolant temp actually drops to 150 because of idleing while unhooking trailer. Since this the gauge still cycles like it did before while heating first thing only approxamately 10 deg. cooler. Like 180 to 160 instead of 190 to 170 like before. Any Ideas out there? (OK five ? )

Mine is doing the same thing basically. Before this started, it never went over 190 even when towing. IT was always up and down in the normal range 180 down to 150 and back up. But now it is has gone crazy even with new thermostat. Were in the same boat.
Search for Faulty gauge I have a post going for this with my 12 valve.
Let me know if you find something out.

I don't think so, my 97 didn't. Had to change the springs when I installed the Jacob's exhaust brake. Springs came with it, then I changed the intake springs when I installed the 3GSK. 98 1/2 24 valves engines and newer come with 60 pounders.

My 98 didn't have 60# springs?
Would it be only specific applications that got them?

You might be right. I'm going on info from installing two exhaust brakes, both were on 3500 manuals though.

Oh Well on the springs. Guess I'll find out if I ever get to install a E-brake or the 4k gsk. Thanks though guys.

What would be the diffrence in the upgraded headgasket? More reinforcement around the cyliders?

Roughstock, in reading your post about the thermostat I would think in your truck the sending sensor may be going bad, just a guess. In my truck the gauge never gets to 190* anymore. It builds temp to around 180* then cycles some like 160* to 180* thens hold constant at 180*. It doesn't have the dramatic brop from 190* to 160* like it use to do. I'm beginning to wonder if my thermostat is stuck open, but everyoune says that if it happens it takes a long time to warm up. As of right now it seem to not take any longer to get to 180* than it used to it just doesn't get as hot.
