Thanks: bill50cal
I've had my overdrive rigged on a toggle switch for a few months due to a speedometer failure,I was remarking on another thread how I was happy that the lock-up was disabled. I didnt think I was doing any damage(and so far no problems). Bill made a comment about the heat my trans was generating and he got me thinking.I did some research and took a good look at a schematic for the trans hydrualic system, and, desided to heed his warning and wire another switch. WHAT a huge improvement,With complete control and solid lock-up,there is no shudder, hunting, slipping that I remember when the PCM was actuating the TCC. It's like having extra gears, the lock feels as soilid as a Man trans. I lock the TCC at about 2200 in 3'rd,it drops er down to about 1700 rpm and pulls like a sob,a click of a switch and she jumps into 4'th and takes off. I can crawl along at about 1200 rpm in 3'rd or 4'th and get super milage, and she pulls up with a little right foot. I def am going to grab a dbl.pole switch so I can switch into lock than lock 4. right now I'm juggling the 2 switches.I will leave the orig.switch I've installed so I can unlock the converter in od for coasting down the long hills. AGAIN props to bill50cal for making me think. Thats what this forum is all about.
crawling around in 4th gear at anywhere under 40 WILL burn you overdrive clutches out. it will take a bit but i assure you it will do it. these RH transmissions have mechanical governors and need some decent rpms to regulate pressure
first green thanks for the kudo's but be careful about lugging it down to low as you can and will break the input shaft. as I stated in a PM you could use a 35-45 PSI switch in the gov test port to control lock up and not have to worry about a second toggle switch
now to cj
the gov DOES NOT control line pressure, that is the job of the PR regulator valve and throttle valve, I can show you line pressure anywhere from 75 PSI to 150 with NO gov. pressure.

Yeah, all feedback well recieved. I realize lugging around might cause some damage,But,I'm doing this with very light throttle input as to not put too much torque through the cluches. I do, in third or od ,depending on the conditions ,bring the power back on. Not by stomping down but by gradually adding until around 1800 or so where I apply a bit more pressure. I have not experienced any slippage yet,and am always on the switch just in case.
Please understand this is My first diesel.I am concerned about its prior owners repairs and up keep.( He did talk the talk, but what i've found so far leaves little doubt of his skill level) But, This is only a secondary vehicle,I expect things to break,or be close to EOL, I'm only tooling around these last few days in er' because I just resolved a fuel delivery issue and want to be sure all is well. I know the trans and converter is a weak link on these Dodge CTD's,so I expect to be replacing them in the near future anyway. Not that I'm made out of money,But I could have gone out and bought an 2011 if I really had a need for a HD truck on a daily basis, I like wrenching on things and see this as a good project. It certainly is a great foundation. Iwill resist the temptation to lug too low in the range,as I respect the opinions and knowlage of all you here at the DTR. Hope your all having decent weather,Its an ice storm around here today. Again thanks for all the great advice.
