TC Lock Up Switch...Plse explain.

I have done several searches and found lots of info and the install seems very easy, but could someone plse explain the advantages?...If the tranny is working properly the TC is going to lock up anyways. I may be missing something, but other than keeping it locked to slow down with the engine I don't understand why you would want to force it to stay locked. Does it have any effect on acceleration or lo end pwr? What do those of you who have it installed think about how it works? Is it worth doing for towing applications?

Thanks

Hey fellow Canuck, where's home?
The lock up switch works great when towing or racing.
In stock trim your converter unlocks when you lift off the accelerator and your rpm drops below a set (14-1600rpm I think?) rpm and you loose all engine braking, with the switch you can force lock-up to help slow the truck.
Also in stock trim your converter unlocks anytime you go full throttle so if your racing it makes a huge difference (.5 second in the 1/4) to keep it locked
There are things you must consider however with the switch
a) at times of low rpm your line pressures are low and forcing lock-up without enough pressure will cause the clutch to slip.
b) locked shifts are hard on parts and can cause shaft (generally output shaft) breakage in trucks with added hp.

The stock converter is so loose in fluid coupling a few like to force lock-up to make it like a manual trans.
The issue comes later when they find it 'cool' to let it shift while locked!!!
This is not how the trans is designed to work and breaks things like the input shaft.
It is better to get a tighter converter and be happy.
i had a lock-up switch when mine was stock/lower power, but removed the switch when I found how nice a tight converter is.

Thanks!

Thanks for the explanation fellas! The more I ponder this it seems there is no way around it...I should just bite the bullet and replace the TC and VB. Everyone raves about what a difference it will be but there is no one in the area (Petawawa, Ontario...kind of a 1 horse town) that has done this so that I can actually get a first hand experience of the changes before spending 3k+.
