swapped in used 215 pump, now engine is quiet??

I have a 95 ram with the auto and little 160hp pump in it. I had a cam installed along with studs, orings and head decked .015 and .020 gasket that killed off a little compression. soon after the work I started having weird problems with it. Fuel economy dropped to 11mpg. Start it up in the morning and Id get lots of smoke and a rolling idle that shook the truck until I revved it to 1k rpm. The truck has always been insanely loud, like I was running a lot of timing. Not only did the new pump fix the smoke and idle problems but the noise is almost gone. Sounds like im driving a common rail truck. What happened? If I was to guess Id say something was wrong in the pump that either overfueled at idle or screwed up the injection timing.

I ran 191's in the old pump, what do you folks think about 181s versus 191s in a 215? Feels a little gutless when im trying to spool it, guess thats normal.
Since its pouring rain here I cant lay into it and see what it does. I dont want to go sideways, heh.

you do know the 215 pump retards the timing as you go up in rpm, and most likely it sounded like your pump was going out, needed a rebuild. and i bet with the new pump your timings different too.

Didnt know it changed timing WRT RPM.. Guess that explains the difference.
I believe the part about needing a rebuild. It was smoking at idle really bad.

FWIW, the timing retards with rack travel, not with RPM. What timing were you running before, and what are you running now?

I was running 18 before, 19 now. I dont think Id want to go much higher.. though it starts right up and doesnt show any side effects from higher timing.
Im going to look at what the plate and AFC are set at since power doesnt seem the same. I dont think the smaller 181's would change much.
I dont recall seeing any smoke once I was on full boost so I think the fuel is turned down some from the old pump.

You might be surprised at the difference 191's make over 181's.

I had no smoke WOT with 181's in my truck. EGT's never got over 1300* through the 1/4 mile.

The 191's made it haze quite a bit WOT and EGT's are now pegged on 1500* pretty quickly.
