Suspect Inection Pump problem
Suspect Inection Pump problem
I have a stock 95 Dodge 2500 (170,000 miles)with the P7100 injection pump. The other day after the truck was at operating temp on a short trip to town it started into a dead miss which felt like one cylinder. The throttle was very unresponsive and floated on its own up and down. When I came to a stop and pushed the clutch in it would die every time. I could get it restarted but only by giving it a lot of fuel. I immediately suspected the injection pump because of the throttle floating all over. I got the truck home and waited until the next day to check a few things ie: fuel pressure, lines etc. With the engine cold it ran like there was never a problem, I took it for an extended test drive and approx. 30 mins later I experienced the same symptoms as I described above. So I let it cool down and the miss and the throttle float all goes away. I still suspect a problem in the pump but do not understand it coming and going related to temp. I talked with a gentleman who told me of a plunger and barrel problem that he heard had a tsb on it. Was wondering if anyone could confirm this or has seen a similar problem? Thanks.
I had a '95 that did the same thing and it was the IP. On hot days it would start missing and the throttle would get hard and unresponsive. A reman IP fixed it right up. The 94-95 pumps seem to have this problem. You could also get a used pump off a 96-98, I don't believe they have this problem.
Both my '95s had the warped plunger/barrel problem.
Replacing the injection pump is the cure.

I found I was able to get by for quite some time by keeping the fuel tank full as possible and adding a quart of two stroke oil with every tank.
But that got old after three years...

I had the same problem on my 95....but it was intermittant...The truck would completely shut down only on the highway...Sometimes it was after 500 miles or after 10 miles...I landed up also, replacing the IP that fixed the problem
