Starters, how long do they last?

Truck has between 192-200K on it and the starter has begun to do the "click" thing when trying to turn the engine over. Also every few starts the starter gear hangs engaged.

Thinking about putting in new contacts and plunger but wonder if I should just replace the whole deal with that many miles.

Thoughts?

Dont replace the starter for no need. Replace the contacts, and be done with it for a while. Mine messed up a while back. Put new contacts in it, and cleaned the plunger, and its good as new now. As cheap as it is to just put the starter contacts in; I cant see spending the $ on a starter. One thing is for sure. Fix it before you have to replace much more than the starter because it hangs "on" with you.

I agree. Put in the contacts- that's probably the only problem you'll ever have with that starter.

I was thinking of going with LarryB's setup but figured I'd ask anyway.

Rick, just had my head buried in the books

Just go ahead and replace the contacts and/or plunger , if there is nothing wrong with the rest of the starter , why replace it.

BTW , was all this smoke caused by what i think it was?
