starter, ampmeter,shifting

Hi Folks;
Let me begin by saying I am new to this forum and fairly new to diesels. I have a 94 dodge ram 2500 pick-up with automatic transmission, with cummins 5.9 engine.

We have just relocated from Massachusetts to northeast Tennessee. The day we left Mass I started the truck and the starter stayed engaged. I tried to shut it down but it would not shut off it just kept running. It took it about 5 minutes to disengage, once that happened it was fine for e few hours. About two hundred miles into the move we stopped for supper, the truck would not turn over after tapping the starter we were able to get it running, we also needed jumper cables to do that. We were back on the highway and the headlights started flashing on and of as if it were a code. They would flash a few times then shut off. I shut the headlight switch off for a few seconds then turned it back on they were fine for a while. The ampmeter at this point was between 13 and 14 volts. It is ussually above 14 volts. The truck would stall when I stopped for fuel, the transmission would not shift correctly.

We stopped over night at a hotel and when we started in the morning everything was fine, ampmeter above 14 volts, transmission shifted ok truck kept running. About an hour into it the ampmeeter would drop to about 14 volts and everything that happened the night before started happening with one exception I could always start the truck, but if I pulled upto a stop sign it would stall.

Once down here took it to the dodge dealer they adjusted the idle for me which cured the stalling issue. What I still need to cure is the shifting and the ampmeter issue seems to bo connected to that problem somehow. As long as it is charging above 14 volts it is fine, get down to 14 and it starts to shift funny or not at all. If I let off the accelerator it will shift. If I do not do that it does not increase speed, or power and starts pushing light blue smoke.

Any ideas? I have two new batteries and a new alternator.

Thank You
Dave
