Slow, Hard, Cranking!
Slow, Hard, Cranking!
The other day my truck started to crank over slow and hard, it acted like the batts were half dead. I checked the alt and it was fine, the batts are 10yrs old but still tested within spec, the cables are all very clean and in great condition. i bought new batts thinking that had to be the problem but it cranked over the same. I then removed the starter and noticed my 2yr old HD contacts were worn half way dirty and pitted. I filed, cleaned contacts and still cranks the same.
what do you guys think could be the problem? could the starter motor itself be old and to worn no matter how good the contacts are?

Where can i buy the brushes? And what is the best way to install them? I have the heavy duty contacts from larrys so you must be talking about the brushes in the motor side of the starter.
Buy from Larry.

it was the starter, the truck did not start this morning(cranking to slow)got a reman from autozone and problem solved. truck starts fast but the starter sounds like crap, told the guy at autozone about the starter and he said he would order in as many starters under warranty till i found one that i was happy with. i would have kept my denso and ordered parts from Larry B, but when i took it apart the windings were burnt and split, also the gear was cracked.
My Optima redtops lasted for 13 years and one is still running a small diesel tractor, the other an electric fence.
Odyssey batteries last a long time too.
With batteries you definitely get what you pay for.
A lot depends on climate, hot areas tend to go though batteries faster and ten years may not be possible with any battery.
