rebuilt engine?

I was wondering if you guys might think that my truck has a rebuild engine. The motor looks brand knew under the hood it runs strong and seems to have more power then another truck we drove with 100,000 less miles. My truck has 295,000.

Welcome to this forum! Be sure to write what kind of truck you have in your signature so everyone knows what you're talking about.

As far as your truck, what type of person did the previous owner seem like? He may have souped up the engine a bit and kept the engine clean as a type of hobby. Do you have a boost and egt gauge? How much boost are you pushing?

I just thought that I may be a little help to you because I had to put a Cummins Recon motor in my '97. The most noticeable way to tell is on the first valve cover, there would be a blue and silver plastic badge that says Cummins Recon, but if there is no badge, the look at your spec tag on the driver's side of the front of the engine. There will be another Cummins Recon logo on it, but more importantly look at your build date, will be recent. My build date was 7/22/04, and my truck was built in 97. I hope that I have offered you some helpful advice.

The truck does not have any gauges or anything and no badges. I also want to know if some black smoke is normal when getting back on the gas after shifting. The truck is a 5 speed 97 12v cummins with 295,000 on it but runs real strong.

check my gallery for smoke . i do believe that its normal for your truck to smoke a little. If not modded. But as im sure you can tell, mines got a few goodies to blow that kinda smoke. I wouldnt worry about it if i was you.

Look at the turbo wastegate hose and see if it has a brass adjustable valve somewhere on it. If it does then it might have a TST kit or the stock fuel plate has been bumped up for more power.
