Rear axle binding like its in park (when moving)

Hey guys & gals-

Just got another 2nd gen dodge for a donor swap, & prev owner said tranny went out on him. Prob seals leaking or something because fluid ran out & truck stopped moving as he rolled into his driveway a few months ago. Been sitting ever since.
Winching it up on the wrecker last night, the truck was in neutral (felt just a tad sloppy / less notchy than normal), the rear wheels were going backwards & forwards, just like if you dragged it in park. The shifter wasn't too far off of normal as far as feeling the detents for each gear.
Pulling it off the flatbed in drive (with what tranny fluid was left in it), the truck would move forward a little at a time, but the left rear wheel would still turn backwards.
Any ideas on what this could be?? Never seen anything like it
Thanks

when I broke my pinion on my limited slip D70, the pieces jammed up the clutch packs so the axle drove like it was fully locked up- like welded spider gears, would even churp and hop in parking lots
