rattling in front end (besides the engine)

I've got this terrible rattle/ metallic sound somewhere in the front end. Sounds like something is dragging against a brake rotor. Or a chain dragging on the ground. I've pulled both front wheels and there is nothing touching the rotors. The sound is loud enough to hear over the engine with the windows down, especially in town where it bounces off parked cars or buildings. Also, it doesn't stop when I press on the brakes. Only stops when the wheels aren't turning.

The truck isn't handling funny or anything. But people outside of the truck can hear it and they give me strange looks. I can't have any of that now, can I!

Any ideas what this could be?

Maybe your front wheel bearings are getting ready to bite the dust? Or is there a chain dragging?

wheel bearing(s) maybe.. lift one side oif the front end...grab the wheel both hands and attempt to wiggle it side to side...if it wiggles then ur most likely have a bearing/hub....

Hope its not a wheel bearing! I had to deal with that a few weeks ago. I ended up needing both wheel assemblies, wheel studs, rotors, and pads. Over $500.00 from O'Reilly.

Sounds like a chain rattling?

Try putting it in 4x4 and see if the sound gets 10x worse.

CV joint on the front driveshaft, the one that connects to the transfer case.
Probably upchucked all the needle bearings.

I had a sound exactly like that, even resorted to shutting the engine off and coasting down my street trying to pinpoint it, then shifted into 4x4 and it sounded like a box of chains dropped in the road.

This is assuming your truck is a 4x4 of course,
but your driveshaft shouldn't be turning all the time like mine does unless your CAD is stuck.

I had that same sound too mine turned out to be a hunk of the rusty rotor fell down between the rotor and the backing plate. I had to take of my tire and spin it by hand because it only happened every once in a while.

I know this sounds stupid , but check for a loose hubcap , seriously , mom had this problem on her minivan , sounded like a chain or something hitting a wheel or something of the like , i had every tire off of that thing , spinning it and wiggling stuff , to no avail , happened to give the hubcap a kick one day when i was standing there talking to someone...

If it has the SLT laramie or the SLT < or Sport it wont have hubcaps thos are full wheels with only a small plastic center cap that probably wouldn't make that much noise. Even if it is just steel wheels it would just be a beuty ring a that center cap. Not like the van which is a full hubcap.

Funny this came up. I noticed yesterday that my left frt wheel bearing has gotten very loose. What do they cost to replace on a 2 wd truck? Is this a dealer only part or can they be had at parts stores now?

Help!!!!

You can get them at auto parts places. They should be tons less than the 4wd ones. I know when I was getting mine they had them for 2 and 4wd trucks. Just call and ask...
