Price on complete 12v engine?

Hey guys,
I'm pretty much a 12v newb (all I know is what Diesel Power Mag has told me) but I've always liked the idea of a simple engine that you can do free mods on and have heard nothing but good things about the 94-98 p-pumped 12v's. So...
Today I was at a guy's (junk)yard helping my Dad load up a couple generators when, what do you know, there's a Cummins sitting on a pallet. A quick look and I see it's p-pumped, and looks like someone just took it out of a truck. It's got its turbo, intercooler, clutch, a bunch of wiring draped over it, the works. I asked the guy about it and he said it came from a 97 or 98, he wasn't sure, and "its supposed to have been rebuilt". There's some rust here and there but didn't look like it had been outside very long. So, not knowing the mileage or anything, what is an engine like this worth? It's not like I have a truck to put it in or the knowledge to do so but I just hate to see it go to waste. So give me some number$

Thanks

Not knowing the history is nerve wracking. I'd rotate the motor over to make sure nothings seized up internally. Then pop off the valve covers and timing cover and have a look. Everything oughta be nice and clean. No missing teeth, etc. Also see if the KDP has been tabbed. If everything checks out, buy it.

Prices are all over the board, but not knowing mileage or history I wouldn't give top dollar for it. I have seen great condition 12v motors go for 1,750 but I have also seen rougher examples go got 3,500. All depends on the buyer and seller.

Thanks! Now that I think about it I'm glad I didn't just fork over a grand or two and take home who knows what. If I get the chance I'll ask if he'll let me take a closer look.
For my own good I should just forget about it now. But its so perfect...

If you can get it for $1k, I'd scoop it up. Most of the 12v's up this way go for about $2k, but I won't pay that much for one. Often, you can find a running truck for a couple bucks more than what guys are asking for just and engine. Makes more sense to buy the whole truck and part the rest out.

I would much rather have a truck than just a motor, but i'm interested in this one because its kind of a rare opportunity for me, and if somewhere down the line id want to do internal work on it and/or swap it into a half ton or something then I'd have to jerk it out anyway.
Anybody got a cheap beater 12v still in its truck?
