I used to have 1997 ctd, and one day it started cutting out, and blowing white smoke. It would finally die, and would take a few minutes for it to start again.

This was before DTR, so I was on my own. I called every dealership around trying to talk to mechanics, and only 1 knew something. (all the others wanted me to bring it in). He told me to check the pre-heater screen. I did just that, and behold! it was clogged like crazy.

It had some nasty, gooey stuff in it. I cleaned it out, and never had a problem agian.

I always wondered what that gooey stuff was.

I just replaced the pre-heater screen yesterday. I bought the kit from the local cummins repair shop and it was around $10 total. Piece of cake to do, just need a 17 mm 12-pt box wrench and a 24 mm socket. It is not as awkward as changing the fuel filter, so it's not too bad of a job to do.

just crack the bleeder on top of the filter and pump the primer on the lift pump.

Yea, me too. I bought the fuel filter and the prefilter screen kit but haven't done it, I think I'll get new hose to put on at the same time too.

you don't have to replace the pre screen if you don't want to, just clean and reinstall.

Good idea to have the quad ring though, they often fall apart.
