oil leak at bottom of engine

There is a oil leak at the bottom of the engine. all the steering and part of the differetial is slightly coated with oil. There seems to be some on the crossmember and oil pan to. Also I just drove it in the rain yesterday so some of it could be wet from that because its not to thick but it is black.

Also

Also I can only smell oil on the passenger side when it is running there is also some oil on the front of the alternator maybe from the oil running with the belts then building up right before the belt curves. There is no oil on the block or on the sides. And where is the vacuum pump located. The oil seems to be on everything under neath the motor.

I think I figured it out i found the vacuum pump and followed the oil marks and seems to me that everthing under it or the drivers side is ful of oil then the fan just kicks the smell to the other side and get on the belts which makes it get to the alternator. Does this seem logical.

Also does my truck have any crankcase breather and if it does where is it and if thats it how can I fix that from leaking or getting it everywhere. I 'don't know if it has excessive blow by it does seem to be burning any oil out the exhaust no white smoke even at start up or when getting on the gas just black smoke.

That's what I was waiting for, wasn't sure if your truck had the blowby bottle or if it was a later year addition.

If it does, it will be on the front of the engine just behind the fan, and it should be emptied every oil change, otherwise it will get full and start overflowing getting oil everywhere.

I am thinking about going to look at a truck on a dealer lot. The salesman said that the last guy looking at it did not buy it because it has an oil leak. It is a 96 regular cab auto 4x4. What all should I be looking for. It is a great price for a clean looking truck with about 160k.

Thanks,
Nick

This might help you.

Click

The breather tube is the tube you can see in the drawing that runs just below and to the right (while looking at the drawing) of the fuel filter. Follow it down behind the starter and just below that.

No. On the 24v it's located directly to the front of the injector pump on the opposite (front) of the timing case. It will have a tube that starts up and then curves down dead ending in a bottle possibly. I added a plastic barb and some 0.75" all purpose hose and directed it back and down behind my front diff. Don't go too far as it could freeze in the winter. Also make sure that it goes in a downward angle so it doesn't have any low spots.

That is correct. On my 1997 It ended just below the starter and dripped on the yoke end of the front diff. I added a plastic barbed fitting and a short length of hose to get it just below the diff housing.

If you have a 97, check the dial pin. You have problems. you won't have oil on the steering linkage from the blow by.
