Oil filter stuck
 

98. 12v. Oil filter is stuck on. I didn't remove the top bolt initially, so I cranked on it a little. Then I was able to budge it in the right direction, got a little easier, then stuck. Oil is drained. Can't leave truck it where it is

Please tell me there's a trick or technique. I'm obviously not that strong, and there's Not much room in there...

The only trick I know is to be sure and remove it when the engine is warm, they will grip like all get out cold.....

I use a Big pair of channel locks on my 12 valve....wish I had a magic cure for you but that is all I have...Good Luck!

second vote for channel locks. Second best is oil filter pliers.

Ok I made some room in there, but I got a spark with the channel locks. Guess I need to disconnect the batteries, there alt is right there. If this doesn't work, can I cut it off?

Hammer and a flat head screw driver.

Thanks, I tried it. Drained the oil, but didn't give me more leverage, limited space, so it's not off yet. :(

I get a tiny budge with the channel locks, but can't get a new bite d/t space.
Below is a picture of a metal tubing that camps onto a 90' bolt. If I could unclamp that line at the and move it, I'm pretty sure I can do this.

So is it ok? I'm looking the part up but thought you might have a quick answer.x thanks for all the help

Got it, finally. Didn't remove that line. After knocking it loose a little with the channel locks, warming back up in the sun, and the extra room, I managed it with the oil filter wrench, verrry sloooowly.

From the date on the filter, I see I must have run into the same problem with the last oil change, and skipped changing it.

I had a similar problem removing an oil filter from the 350 in my boat; after a few hrs trying to figure out something, even considered just lifting the engine out a neighbor suggested this tool, and it worked like a charm. http://m.napaonline.com/Tablet/parts...320_0405868280

I have a similar tool, a strap wrench for tight filters with poor access. It's just a loop of seatbelt type material and a 1/2" drive. The tighter you turn it, the tighter it gets. Works pretty good.

barngal, since you sparked the Alt., just make sure you are charging once you get her running. It is easy depending on how much you really hit it to blow the 140 amp fuse going into the PDC on the drivers fenderwell.

When you put the new one on oil the gasket AND DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN to many people make that mistake and let the engine cool down its easier to come off http://contentinfo.autozone.com/znet...25320/image/4/ here is what i use

I also use a belt type oil filter wrench, fits in all nice and flexible then the harder you turn the wrench the more it grabs. works great on my other ultra hard to get to filters on things I own too

$200???????? I go to a place here that the owner himself works with the employees. Delo 400, filter, all fluids topped (transfer case, axles, ect), floors vacuumed, windows cleaned, tire pressures, end to end. $75. You're getting ripped off.

Also, when you put the new filter on, don't use a filter wrench. Just grab it by hand and tighten. Try to back it off by hand, if it doesn't come lose easily it's good. Makes it a lot easier next time.
