O-ring on prescreen

I cleaned my pre screen the other day, and noticed the square o-ring on it was a little cracked and brittle. I went to the dodge dealer to get a new one, and they told me that I had to get the screen and o-ring together, but that would cost $35. My screen is fine, all I need is the little rubber o-ring type gasket. Can I just replace it with a regular o-ring, or does it need to be the square type, and do I have to get the $35 kit?

Here is some info on your o ring.

Click

The part number is in the article. When I did my 1997 I had an International truck dealer order the parts from Cummins. If your near denver you could contact Cummins Rocky Mountain. I don't remember exactly what the price was but it seemed like about $15.00 for the screen kit and the o ring. I ordered the o ring separately.

Thanks fschiola, that is a lot of info. I am not near Denver, I am on the west slope. I thought the price here was a little high. I will check Cummins in Grand Junction.

Wow, Thanks Bill, you came through again! How is it you know so much about the CTDs? I see you answering a lot of questions for a lot of people, including me. Well you have helped me more than a few times, and I appreciate that!

I got mine from fleet gaurd. For some odd reason they were slightly under sized. A real pita to install. I had to stretch them by hand. Then put it on the bowl and quick screw the bowl on before the oring schrunk back. Theres no way those could have been the right ones. They also always leaked too. Gonna maybe try the cummins part#.

There are 2 o rings, one on the heater bowl and one on the top. They are different sizes. When I replaced the strainer it came with an o ring. I ordered the top one separately.
