NV4500 Speedometer drive???

As some of you know I'm doing a Cummins swap into a '67 Dodge Town Wagon. Got a NV4500 off of E-bay at a good price. It was refurbed by a tranny shop and is in good shape but I find that it's missing the speedo gear or whatever it is that goes in the tailshaft for speedo. All it has is the vacant hole! What goes in there and what can I expect to pay for one used? Any clues??! Thanks for advice.....

Oh, it's supposedly a '96 2WD that uses mechanical speedo.

A '96 would have an electronic speedo. I'm gonna move this over to the 2nd gen forum, since they have more experience with NV4500's.

Thanks, I appreciate it!

It has a gear and a sensor that is actually a small generator (for lack of a better term). The faster you go the more current it sends to the speedo which has a small electric motor driving the odometer and the needle. I replaced mine and I believe the two parts came to around $100, could have been less. I'm not sure if you can adapt them to an after market speedo.

Thanks for the tips! I double-checked and the tranny is a '97 so it's definitely electronic speedo. I checked out the AutoMeter website but couldn't make heads or tails from their info. Something about a Hall effect sensor on their elec. speedos but no further info that I could find. Called a vendor for Autometer and all I got was maybe and could be and zip for brains. I must use an aftermarket speedo and don't want to buy any parts I don't need. Thanks again....

+5v supply, probably Hall effect, puts out a 5v pulse, 8 pulses per rotation, factored by number of teeth on output shaft gear, final drive ratio and tire dia for pulses per mile

And thanks again! Looks like I need to talk to the AutoMeter folks as I'm probably going to use their gauges and speedo. A friend gave me 3 of their gauges brand new, oil pressure, volts & water temp, so just gotta fill out the set. Still at least $400 even with the gift! Yipes! [yuk]

Dodge\Mistubishi speedo needs ~41 pulses for 20mph, ~112 for 55 - it's linear

Glad they're doing the math. I get confused even figuring out the mile posts on the highway once it gets past 3.... [dummy]

Compare required p\m to requirements for speedo of your choice

JimmieD 08-13-2006 10:08 AM

Ahh, okay. Pulses per mile compared to speedo? I saw some mention of 16 pulse regarding AutoMeter so have to go back and check that. Thanks again.
