nv4500 ?

looks like i may be in the market for a tranny for my truck. will a 2wd nv4500 work in my 4wd? i've never seen a 2wd one but i'm assuming i can just remove the tailhousing and bolt up the tcase adapter? also, what years came with them? ford and chevy ever use them? do i have to pull the bellhousing from the motor to replace my transmission? my clutch is great. i know that's alot of questions but i need to get a tranny in quick. thanks

You will have to disassemble the hole trans and replace the main shaft with a 4X4 main and then you can put the 4X4 tail housing. The 2wd main is longer. they were offered from 94-03 Yes they were offered in the 03 non-HO. It is easier to pull the bell with the trans but you COULD leave it on, Just hard to line back up to go back in.

What year truck do you have? One thing to consider is finding a NV4500 that has the appropriate speedometer output, be it mechanical or electrical, otherwise it may take a bit of work to hook that up.

Just swapped in a 5 speed in mine. I bought a 2wd nv4500. Completely disassembled it and changed the mainshaft (4wd shaft is shorter...you can buy em on ebay) and put on 4wd tailhousing (bought off ebay as well)

How far from Ft. Worth are you. Standard Transmission is one of the best rebuilders in the business.

If my transmission is removed for repair (and it has been about 7 times) I remove the pressure plate and check the clutch plate, replace the release bearing and check the rear main seal.

Any tranny I have pulled, I leave the bellhousing on the engine. You do need to put the bellhousing on the tranny before installation though. In a 98, it shouldn't matter what year tranny you get, as the speedo is picked up off the rear axle. I have a 94 tranny in my 98 dually. 94-97 had the speedo pickup in the tailhousing (2wd), so you would have to change that if you had an older truck.

well.. pulled the pto cover and sure enough, the lower gear in the forward gear set was missing about 4 teeth. got the fluids drained and driveshafts pulled so far. quick question, how do you pull the shifter on the tranny? do i have to take the console deal out of the cab to get to it? thanks

yeah you have to pull the console stuff up to get to the shifter i would any way it is easier to put the fluid in right there after you get the new one in and make sure you use the right fluid.

Pull the console out, and there will be 4 bolts that hold the shift lever in the top of the case. I'd say stuff a rag in the top, but since its getting rebuilt and cleaned anyhow, not really a big deal.

i have had to pull my tranny here lately also. All you have to do to pull it out is push the shifter down and then turn it.

Only the 94-97 trannys have the lock collar you push and turn. The 98 and later trannys have 4 bolts holding the shiflt lever in.
