No 2nd gear

Hello well i've found many posts on this but most of them are different some say rebuild time "band failure" some say adjustment or a pin falling out or wedge, some said electronics, servos ect,.
Well here's what i have a 96 with 115000 miles, bd trans 40000 ago, typical gov sol ect 2000 ago, well just driving around town and all of a sudden it would rev high in first then shift into 3rd, tried to manually shift into 2nd but it would go into first it seems that 2nd is completly gone. fluid is clean and no smells and no codes
Ill pull the pan first to see whats in it. What will i be looking for??
Do i have to pull the vb to see what i need to see??
Thank's in advance for the help.

Drop the pan and see what you find. Look for parts laying or loose in the pan. Could only be a couple of things. Bent strut and possibly broken lever come to mind. There's a few others, but no sense in talking about them till you have the pan off.
