Need assistance, wiring engine/coolant temp sensor

My temp gauge quit working and I figured it was the sender. Finally got my hand back to the sender and the wire going to the sensor is nowhere to be found. I've got what feels like it might be a stub of one wire poking out of a big wireloom that runs along the drivers side of the engine up top (past the intake air temp sensor). I also have a single blue wire with a spade type female connection hanging loose in the same general area as the coolant temp sensor only more towards the front of the engine. This wire looks like an add on, it has a splice with some heatshrink around it.

Can anyone remember who has been back there what the wires should look like going to the engine/coolant temp sensor or what loom they might have come out of?

Thanks and take care

Ground the wire and the gage should go full over to hot if it does then that is the right wire.
