Loosening the driveline pinion nut
I need to replace the pinion seal and need some ideas on how to loosen the 1 7/8 nut, which is torqued to 450 lbs. I tried a 1/2 drive impact, 1:4 multiplier, and a cheater and I still could not budge it. Any ideas would be appreciated. Doug

Bigger impact or higher air pressure. I belive I used a 3/4" impact on my 99. Also we run 160 PSI. I had to use our bug air hammer (rivet gun that is twice the size of the 3/4 impact) to drive the pinion out. Our 4x rivet gun was not enough.

I did mine in the driveway and didnt have any trouble getting it off with a very large Snap-on ratchet set. I think it was a 3/4" drive. Worked like a champ.

Thought I answered this but now it's gone...
Use a long breaker or one with a cheater pipe and roll the truck forward with the breaker hitting the ground. |
Thanks for all the input. Doug

Sometimes simple is good
BTDT, too. Several times over the years. Not as crazy as it sounds if it gets the job done properly.

Ingersoll-Rand 2135Ti @ 125 psi and a proper OTC impact socket. Like it wasnt even there.
Good tools for the win. |
