i finally got one!!
after my first pst on whether to get a 12 valve or a 24,, i finally got me a truck today.. it is a 1996 regular cab longbed 4x4 with an auto trans and is completely bone stock. an older man owned it since it was brand new and it only has112000 miles which for around my area is super low miles for a diesel truck. i am so happy with this truck, i have only had it for about 4 hours and i am already making plans for the needed tranny upgrades. also i want some info on the plate in the pump and what i need to do with it to make this baby poor some black coal out the tailpipe!!
so heres a hello from a happy new cummins owner. oh yah, and what is the difference between the different oil filters available form fleetguard.

black coal instructions:
slide the AFC housing full forward and turn the starwheel forward till it bottoms out... then floor it!
I use the 3894... it's a few dollars more, but it filters better than the others and has a stronger case... the first time I saw my aftermarket oil press gauge peg 100psi, I decided to go w/ the stronger case. Not necessary I'm sure as it made it 210k miles w/ the Cummins recomended filters, but like I said, it's only a buck or two more.
everyone's gonna tell you to get a #10 plate and a 3k GSK...
I would be inclined to slide the stock fuel plate forward a smidge when you're messing w/ the AFC stuff... it'll give you a little taste of what's to come. and start saving for a real tranny!!
congrats on your purchase, these 2nd gen 12v trucks are just the greatest!

boostdctd thanks for the picture of the ground down stock fuel plate, i was wondering if i could do that instead of buying one. i turned the starwheel down as far as i could tonight but i didnt have the time after work to take the afc housing off and move the stock plate and also move the housing. a little more smoke with the starwheel turned but i gotta make some more, this weekend i will have the time to do everything mentioned above. happy bombing to me!
No problem, it is actually GunRacer's plate, here is a little more info on it;
Just to make sure it is taken notice of, the EGTs may go to high if you don't have a gauge to watch them so you let off before anything bad happens.
that is the plate i run in my truck, it has a #10 ramp on the bottom and straight up from the deepest part [no top end defueling] of a 10 like a #0 plate. it is a killer street plate but gets real smokey on the top end. a true#0 is deeper than the deepest part of a #10 but i can just slide it forward if i need more fuel. this is the plate i put in my friends trucks that want the best of both worlds on the street, but egts must be held in check with your foot if you don't have a big turbo.
slide your stock plate forward some. adjust your afc. put a governor spring kit in it. www.tstproducts.com has the 12valve install instructions. up the line pressure in your transmission and it should hold another 20-30hp without slipping (if it isn't bad/worn in the first place). then save, use plastic power, or get a loan and get a real modified transmission (do NOT just get a converter, or a converter and valve body).
