my axle side u joint exploded - broke both straps and bearings off

do i need to remove the 4 bolts on the transfer case flange, drop the shaft out, then press the old u-joint out and press a new one in?

Axle side u-joint? Is this an axle u-joint, or driveshaft? I take it from the further description that it is driveshaft. Yes, you press the cups out, remove the old u-joint, press one cup in, put cross in, press in other u-joint, install clips, make sure that it isn't too tight. You may need to tap on the ears to spread things back out and loosen the joint up. It's not that technical of a process, but you need to be careful, don't bang things up, don't lose needle bearings, don't bend driveshaft if you put it in a vise, yada yada. Take your time, be careful, double check things, and you should get it.
And, make sure nothing else was damaged when it exploded. Check things over real good.
