Hard starting on cold mornings

Hello all,

I've been haveing a slight starting problem when it has been cold out side. Its acts like if the grid heater wasn't working so the engine was not at the right temps to fire. However the last few nights i've plugged it in and the situation has not changed.

I recently changed the return lines in the truck, I thought that i got all the clamps tight but I will be checking that today.

A local mechanic suggested that the check valve in the lift pump has gone causeing it to loose its prime over night so last night i pinched the line between the lift pump and the pre heater bowl (I think this is what its called i'm not sure). But this morning it still had a hard start (was plugged in) however it did not have to crank as long before it fired up. Does this mean bad lift pump?

Thanks.

My whole problem was a bad fuel filter, the gasket had gone bad allowing air to leak into the fuel system. I tried to tighten it, made it better, but not right. Replaced it and the whole **** problem went away!

When replacing the rubber fuel lines I've gone to running hose all the way from the engine to the tank and abandoning the steel lines. What I've found happens more than once is that in the struggle to remove and install the hard to get to ends on the bell housing the metal lines get cracked where the bolt down tab is welded on.
You think you've solved the problem only to have another one develop.

Sounds like air leaks. Replace all rubber lines and check the steel. Check the water seperator filter at the fuel heater and check for wettness around the wires. Fuel leaks at the inj returns can cause problems too.

Then again, it could be simply a weak battery. It takes heat for combustion, and if the engine is not cranking fast enough it takes longer for the combustion chamber to heat up to sustain fuel combustion.
