The pre-heater looks a bit like a Chevy fuel pump and is located above and to the front of the starter. You remove the bowl with a 17mm (if I recall) wrench. Do it from the top so you don't get diesel fuel in your armpit. Once the bowl is off you can crawl underneath the truck and remove and clean the screen.

I've done mine twice so far and I attacked it from the bottom. The truck is just too tall and I have a harder time reaching it from the top. Just loosen it and move your arm away quickly, and let some of the diesel drain. I only get a little diesel on my wrench. Put an oil pan under there.

Can ya take pre filter out without draining fuel filter or will all the fuel come out . Just did my filter don't want to do it again .Also I don't know how you guys get the filter can out from undernieth , my fuel lines are in the way , can't slide it out by the framerail , had to come up in front of mastercylinder and that wasn't easy either, first time doing it. Picked up 2 screen kits from cummins about 8 bucks each.

Thanks for the info guys , the 12v FF change won't be as bad the second time, was going to do the screen then but was scared to push my luck after geting it fired up with the FF change.Only took like 3 pumps with the primer and filling can half way to get fuel out the bleeder . Thought there was something wrong lol , with all stories of hundreds of pumps.
