Its fairly cool (around -12F)...started the 12V up to warm up and found a major fuel leak from the fuel filter drain tube...I opened and closed the drain valve a few times and its still leaking.

Never had the lever assembly apart. I assume there is an o-ring or two in the lever assembly. Anyone know size?

same thing happened to mine. lemme guess, all over the starter.

mine cracked the plastic fuel/water sensor gizmo.

also, another time i had a crack in a filter. heard this can be a symptom of a bad overflow valve.

o-ring comes with the filter.

 

I dont think it has anything to do with the filter itself - seems like its just leaking from the filter housing drain.

 

yup, i had to buy the whole plastic fuel/water sensor gizmo including the wires and plug (one part#) from the dealer.

I have never had water in fuel alarm ever. I would like to find the part # for a fuel filter that would fit with no threaded hole in the bottom.

 

Timmy22 ,Your truck has a different filter than the good Doc's truck does, yours is spin on with a thread in WIF sensor/drain in the bottom. The Doc's 98 ( you should really fill in your sig Doc) has a cartridge style filter.

 

I believe Doc has a split personality....

 

Nah , I have met him , he is a pretty good fella , he comes from a large town with lots of opportunity.

I know what his truck his ( I even got to drive it ) but I don't think alot of other people do. He has a 98 12v , and a 24v.

 

That's what I meant by split. He's an under valved and an over valved

Enough about ol Docs valves...

I would pull the filter can (with a new filter cuz the seals swell and will not go back) and check the drain for cracks.. It may have had a small bit of water in it that froze during the last cold snap. Without looking at it myself, the O ring may be replacable on the drain. I am surprised its leaking all of a sudden without operating it.

 

Thats the thing....I never ran the truck during the first cold snap....this happened after it warmed up (and then got cold again).

Im just going out to take a look at it (in the dark of course ).

I should point out that I have a bad habit of never really dumping my water seperator. I suspect that caused this and will be emptying it a lot more regular from now on.

Update - got it fixed...

I pulled off the filter housing and took it apart. There are tow orings that seal the drain lever to the filter housing. Greased them up with some grease and reintsalled it. Looked like there may be an oring inside the lever assembly but the plastic was still cold and I didnt want to force anything. I couldnt see any reason that it was leaking.

Lesson learned, empty your seperator every fuel stop (especially if you live in a cold climate).

Glad to hear you got it fixed Doc, to bad you couldn't find a problem though? I hate when you have a phantom problem that you fix by just taking it apart.

I think it was just froze up....-43 windchills will do that.

Unless you have a stupid '97, where the computer says you have a spin-on, but go to put it on and find out you have a cartridge style.
