front cover seal

front cover seal

I did my KDP two weeks ago on my 94 CTD with no issues or leaks. Today I noticed oil at the bottom of the oil pan right under the timing cover crank seal. I am assuming the seal is has a leak. I am thinking I can install another seal without removing the timing cover. Is that correct??

Apparently you can, a few guys have posted saying that they have done it.The biggest thing with those seals is getting the end of the crank clean for the teflon seal. You have a lot room to move it as well if there is a grove in the crank.I did mine like you when i had the cover off.

id remove the cover to do it,

it would give you the incentive to clean up and retighten all of the bolts on the timing cover again, heck i see your point tho with that fan in the way, NO WAY... what i did is i removed the timing cover once again, and i know it is a sin, but i used form a gasket, (the grey one) HEAVILY on the bottom end, right where you can remove the balancer or whatever that thing with the 4 15 mm bolts is, and then more all the way around. i also did this heavily as well for all six of my valve cover gaskets, Ill admit, i hate the way it looks, but I wind up winning because i have no leaks..

I`d remove the cover, I did my front seal and it was a bear to get in, even with the cover on the bench. You might be able to re-use the cover gasket, on my truck it was a silicone gasket with a steel core, either way IIRC the timing cover gskt set was around 40 beans or so.

watch out how much silicone you use.... you could end up losing by plugging your oil rifles or piston coolers.

took a closer look

After taking a closer look the leak was coming from the top of the drivers side timing cover and dripping all the way down the cover to the oil pan. Snuged the bolts up a little more and all is good..
